Discover Cartel Roasting Co.

If you spend any time around downtown Tempe, chances are you’ve already heard people talk about Cartel Roasting Co. Located at 810 S Ash Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States, this spot has quietly built a reputation as one of the most reliable coffee destinations near Arizona State University. I’ve stopped in more times than I can count-sometimes for a quick espresso before a meeting, other times to settle in with my laptop for a few focused hours-and the experience has stayed consistently strong.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the aroma of freshly roasted beans. Cartel doesn’t treat coffee as an afterthought; roasting is at the core of what they do. According to the Specialty Coffee Association, freshness and roast profile dramatically influence flavor clarity and acidity balance. You can taste that attention to detail here. On my last visit, I ordered a single-origin pour-over. The barista carefully weighed the grounds, monitored water temperature, and poured in steady, controlled spirals. That process might look simple, but it’s grounded in extraction science-water temperature and brew time directly affect sweetness and bitterness. The result? A cup that was bright, slightly citrusy, and incredibly clean.

The menu goes beyond basic drip coffee. You’ll find espresso drinks, cold brew, nitro, and seasonal specialties alongside pastries and light bites. I’ve tried their latte with oat milk more than once, and the microfoam texture is silky without being overly dense. That balance shows skill. James Hoffmann, a respected coffee expert and World Barista Champion, often emphasizes that milk texture should enhance rather than mask espresso flavor. Cartel’s baristas seem to understand that principle well.

What makes this Tempe location stand out isn’t just the drinks; it’s the atmosphere. The interior has an industrial yet welcoming vibe-exposed brick, wooden tables, and a steady hum of conversation. Students review notes, remote workers take calls, and friends catch up over cappuccinos. It feels like a true community hub rather than just another café. In fact, during finals week at ASU, I’ve noticed nearly every seat filled, which says a lot about how trusted this place is for both productivity and comfort.

From a quality standpoint, sourcing matters too. Ethical coffee sourcing has become increasingly important, and organizations like Fair Trade International and Rainforest Alliance highlight how transparent supply chains benefit both farmers and consumers. While not every bag on the shelf carries a specific certification, the staff are open about origins and flavor profiles when asked. That transparency builds trust. On one occasion, I asked about a Guatemalan roast, and the barista explained its elevation, processing method, and tasting notes without hesitation. That level of knowledge reflects genuine expertise rather than scripted answers.

Reviews across platforms consistently mention consistency, which is harder to achieve than it sounds. Coffee brewing is sensitive to small changes-grind size, humidity, even bean age. Yet whether I visit on a quiet weekday morning or a busy Saturday afternoon, the quality remains steady. That reliability is what keeps people coming back. It’s also why many locals recommend this location when visitors ask where to find serious coffee in Tempe.

Of course, no place is perfect. Seating can fill up quickly during peak hours, and parking near 810 S Ash Ave can require a short walk if you arrive late in the day. Still, those minor inconveniences hardly outweigh the overall experience. The combination of skilled roasting, thoughtful preparation, and a relaxed yet energetic environment makes this café feel grounded and authentic.

If you’re exploring coffee shops in Tempe and care about flavor, craft, and a welcoming setting, this address deserves your attention. Whether you’re diving into a new roast, scanning the menu for a cold brew on a hot Arizona afternoon, or reading through customer reviews before deciding where to go, this spot consistently delivers on what matters most: genuinely good coffee made by people who clearly understand their craft.

  • I miss this coffee shop more than anything in Phoenix. The seating is a little clumsy and crowded, but that’s because it’s a scene - all the hipsters and professors from off campus. I found like three boyfriends here and got on the good side of my young professors. Somehow also got a decent amount of work done. A+ pour overs, delectable oat milk lattes, divine savory scones I can’t find anywhere else. Still thinking about them. Miss it every day.

  • Great coffee! Love this spot been coming for a couple years and I always make sure to stop by at least once when I come to Phoenix. Assortment of delicious snacks. Some healthy options too. Most importantly… great coffee!

  • Huge space to spread out. Looks like an excellent study spot or a chill date. The baristas are friendly and don’t rush you. Lots of options to order, they make their syrups in house. The lattes and mochas were great but the cold brew was very bitter.

  • This is a wonderful coffee shop! The prices are a little high and the actual shop sign blended into the parking area so we couldn't find it for a sec. Rather than that, their food items have a good variety (the PSL donut was awesome) and the coffee is wonderful. The mocha is rich and not too sweet and the cortado is smooth and strong. The staff is very kind.

  • I have been ordering coffee online from Cartel for three years. Excellent coffee and prompt delivery. One thing I really like about Cartel is that they offer many light roast selections. I have come to appreciate light roast because it allows me to experience more delicate flavors. In the morning, I grind the beans and use filtered water to make the coffee. I "discovered" Cartel when we stopped into the Palm Springs location. Great coffee, great service, and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend!

  • Great environment with a lot of choices and selections. for coffee I chose to have a dark roast pour over and it was great. Very smooth flavor. I visited 4 coffeeshops while in Tempe, this one was the best! They also had plenty of plugs for charging... and while it was busy, there was a lot of seating. Very industrial vibe.
